VIENNA'S CALLING PROJECT- JOIN US AT NINETEEN74.COM

[ Press exposure- INSPIRE Magazine]

Wow!! What’s just happened? A somewhat fashionable eruption of modernity has hit Austria’s primary city- Vienna. We are in a world confronted with a social chaos. There is no ‘real’ future. It merges the spirit of the past and the essence of today.Fashion will always determine the ‘new’-likewise modernity; except it will be surpassed with something ‘newer’. It’s irrational and such definitions will remain a contradiction. This is back to the future; a distinction between the past and present of Vienna’s glory, at the edge.Hotel Imperial was where the shoot took place; it dates back to 1863. Drawing attention to elegance, elaborate ornamentation and sumptuous surroundings-its suite became the perfect location for the backdrop. And such an Inspiration was found deep inside the minds of NINETEEN74; a project consisting of thirty, or more people from designers, models and stylists alike. The photographer Jürgen Knoth, flirted with the idea that Vienna as a city has finally been recognized for its fashion but rather its history. Consider this masterpiece, a vibe synonymous to the Baroque period. They’ve done it again and following the success and the initial concept of London’s Calling, Raoul Keil and Nicholas Hardy were itching to push things forward; only this time, it was Vienna’s turn to break the mould. And Jürgen Knoth was the star of the show. For now, Vienna’s desire to change and to revolutionize a new generation is disrupted by ‘haunted’ past- what was once a promise is now a threat to their future.

THE PORNAGRAPHER OF VIENNA

Whoever said, ‘never judge a book by its cover?' Prejudging The Pornographer of Vienna’s cover: A mistress [probably] whose female genitals are exposed on the spine of the book, I knew what I was getting myself into. I was deeply immersed into Schiele’s mysterious world of sex, paint, whores, art and his relationship with Gustav Klimt.
Lewis Crofts unveils Schiele’s story-a tragic artist who was a genius in his own right. He was ever so passionate and severely ambitious: leaving his bourgeois upbringing behind him for the ‘grand’ lifestyle in Vienna so he could establish himself as an artist. However, as always, nothing is what it seems...he is strained by the hardship of money and the hypocritical nature of the art world.
This is a beautiful book that is fuelled by Crofts precious words that are judiciously used to echo the evocative effect of schiele’s paintings.

As you may already know POP magazine will be back- hopefully BIGGER and BETTER!! In addition to its reissue in September, FACTORY311 [a photographic, fashion and arts agency based in London] have created a website. The website is a somewhat reminder of the magazine and I was lucky enough to write up an abstract:

I’m alone, deserted: physically, emotionally and spiritually. The dreary and lethargic aspects of reality are crawling back and infecting my life like a disease. Everything’s a f**king mess! Now, in reality I’m raw and scarred; I’m anxious and shaking to the knees from withdrawal symptoms as I lie restless in a shielding position. My arms and hands clinched around my body like a distressed blanket. The bad fairy, uninvited whispers: “I want my fix; that petite drop of POP will compel you to enter the realms of magical transformation”. I imagine myself in the midst of passively stepping into this exterior world; my eyes glaze over the fluoro images; I inhale that fresh-printed smell from the pages - suddenly I’m awakened by my senses: I’m hallucinating, in a state of oblivion but perceptive to everything passionately fashionable. Everything is bountiful: colourful, inspirational and for once I feel truly alive. This is nirvana; my utopia. But the orgasmic buzz comes after you put your mag down: information and ideas collates inside your head- the articles; the crazy styling fits together with prior issues and you just go wild; I want to scream and expell my excess energy. Yet, all I have is these beautifully revived memories and dreams.
